A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
