A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
